Moyross Set for €600,000 Investment with the Opening of New Eurospar Posted on August 24th, 2010
Moyross is set for a €600,000 investment with the re-opening of the estate’s only supermarket which was destined for closure with the loss of 54 jobs.
The former Supervalu premises at Watchhouse Cross will officially re-open as a Eurospar on September 3rd with Mayor of Limerick, Cllr Maria Byrne set to cut the ribbon.
There had been fears that the 54 employees would lose their jobs but Eurospar owner Maurice Smith has confirmed that all jobs will be retained.
“We are delighted to announce that there will be no job losses, but job creation,” said Mr Smith.
“Plans are well underway for our new refurbished Eurospar to open on September 3rd and we have created ten extra jobs already as part of that process. We are committed to investing in the local community and committed to growing our business so we are hopeful that we can take on more staff in the near future and there is the potential to double the amount of jobs already created.”
The new Eurospar supermarket is hoping to attract business from across the Northside of Limerick city with a large chilled off-licence area, fresh food and deli counter, general grocery area and a special aisle featuring branded goods at discounted prices
Eurospar General Manager, Derek Coyle, said the new store will have extended opening hours seven days a week from 8am-10pm and will be a “fantastic addition” to the area.
“We know that regular shoppers will be delighted with the new Eurospar and we’re confident that new customers will be impressed when they visit the store,” he said.
“We want to provide our customers with great range, great value, the best fresh foods and exceptional service. We always support local suppliers and producers and we will make every effort possible to deliver the best quality freshest food to our customers.”
Managing Director of BWG Foods (operators of the EUROSPAR brand), Willie O’Byrne said the Moyross store would be a very welcome addition to the EUROSPAR network in Ireland. “It is always exciting to open a new store but Moyross is a particularly special case because the investment represents the safeguarding of more than 50 jobs in the local community, and is a great vote of confidence in the greater Limerick area. Shoppers in the locale can now look forward to a top class supermarket in terms of products and service and we wish Maurice, Derek and their staff the best of luck with the official opening next week.”
Mayor of Limerick, Cllr Maria Byrne, said she was delighted that the future of the supermarket in Moyross is now secure.
“For both the local workers in Moyross and the local community who use this supermarket on a daily basis, it’s a very good news story,” she said. “I’m delighted with the opening of Eurospar at Watchhouse Cross and I wish Maurice and Derek the best of luck with their new venture.”
The Community Development Network in Moyross have also welcomed today’s announcement.
“We welcome this investment in our community and we’re particularly pleased that jobs are being maintained,” said spokesman, Juan Carlos Azzopardi. “We need this facility in Moyross and we hope that the new Eurospar will prosper and do well.”
