The annual event, organised by Limerick Athletic Club was sponsored by the Limerick Leader, Limerick’s Live 95FM and the VHI and run in association with Limerick County Council and Shannon Development. The 8 kilometre event has been hosted in Limerick since 1998.
The inaugural race saw 400 participants take part but it has grown exponentially now hosting several thousand participants who came from all over Ireland to take part.
Organiser Edel O’Shea said the Limerick Women’s Mini-Marathon brought people together people of all different levels of ability for a fun day out.
“Thanks to all the women who took part in what was a wonderful atmosphere and we were blessed with the weather,” she said. “Limerick women really know how to enjoy themselves and congratulations to all who ran, jogged and walked yesterday, particularly those who raised a lot of money for some very worthwhile charities in the region.”
Edel O Shea paid tribute to Limerick Athletic Club and its members who have worked tirelessly to ensure the continued success of the mini-marathon.
“There’s a lot of organisation involved but we love doing it and are delighted that it has grown to become such a fantastic day,” she said. “The Limerick Leader, our main sponsor, and Limerick’s Live 95FM have supported us since its inception and it is because of this support along with the VHI and our other partners, Limerick County Council and Shannon Development that we can continue to host this great event and we’re already looking forward to next year,” she said.
In recent weeks, Mini-Marathon participants gathered across Limerick city and county to train for the big day.
Both the Limerick City and County Local Sports Partnerships have said the increasing popularity of events like the Women’s Mini-Marathon is encouraging huge numbers to exercise and stay healthy.
Women who have been training for the Mini-Marathon and would like to keep up their fitness are encouraged to log onto www.cllsp.ie in Co Limerick and www.limerickcitysports.ie in Limerick city for full details of Fit4Life and Meet and Train groups over the winter months.
