Rotary Remembrance Tree Limerick Christmas 2011 Posted on December 8th, 2011
Limerick’s annual Christmas Remembrance Tree at the junction of Bedford Row and O Connell St was unveiled today, Thursday 8th December, 2011 at 11am.
With the kind permission of Limerick City Council, Limerick Thomond Rotary Club is providing a wonderful opportunity for citizens and visitors to the city over this festive season to remember their loved ones who are no longer with us at this special time.
The public have the opportunity to be involved in this project by writing the name of the person they wish to be remembered on a ribbon which will be put on the Remembrance Tree.
From today, Thursday, December 8th to Thursday, December 22nd inclusive the tree will become a sea of yellow with thousands of ribbons fixed to its branches and it is expected that during this period over 10,000 names will be remembered.
The official opening of the tree was attended by Mayor of Limerick, Councillor Jim Long, members of Limerick Thomond Rotary Club, and representatives from the nominated organisations set to benefit from the Tree.
Eamonn Flynn, President of Limerick Thomond Rotary Club said that the location of the Remembrance Tree on Bedford Row will be a focal point of assembly for shoppers and visitors.
“It’s a lovely way to remember a loved one by tying a ribbon on the tree in their memory and the tree will stand proudly in the heart of our city centre this December,” he said. “We would be delighted if schools choirs and choral groups would use this site for singing carols that are so much part of our Christmas celebrations.”
Limerick Thomond Rotary Club is nominating a number of organisations to benefit from the voluntary donations that the public may contribute to this project.
Eamonn Flynn added: “Headway Limerick, The Parkinson’s Association of Ireland, The Irish Motor Neurone Association and Multiple Sclerosis Limerick are most deserving of support and members of these organisations will be in attendance at the Remembrance Tree daily to encourage participation by all in this unique event in our festive calendar”.
