Limerick Prepares to Welcome Hundreds of Choristers to the City for Limerick Sings Choral Festival

This June Bank Holiday weekend Limerick will celebrate with song as the inaugural Limerick Sings International Choral Festival takes place on the 1^st and 2^nd of June.

Preparations are currently under way to welcome over 200 choristers to the Treaty City for this non competitive event.

The formal opening of Limerick Sings International Choral Festival 2013 will take place on Saturday, 1^st June with an inaugural concert at St. Mary’s Cathedral at 8pm with performances by seven choirs.

On Sunday 2^nd June the University of Limerick will host a choral extravaganza with seven choirs performing at the University Concert Hall (UCH) at 3pm. Closing this year’s Festival all 250 voices will assemble on stage to raise the roof with a performance of ‘Va Pensiero’ (Chorus of the Hebrew Slaves) from Verdi’s Nabucco and Danny Boy.

Africa Day Limerick Celebrates the City’s Diversity

Limerick will enjoy the sights and sounds of its African communities with four fun filled days of colourful events to celebrate Africa Day on Saturday 25^th May.

A series of FREE family events will take place in Limerick from Wednesday 22^nd to Saturday 25^th May showcasing many aspects of African culture including music, sport, games, literature and art.

The four day event begins with an African Scene Art Workshop with local artist Jean Ryan Hakizimana at the Limerick City Library on Wednesday 22^nd May at 1.45pm. The Hunt Museum will host a Symposium on “Development and Trade – the Relationship between Ireland and Africa” on Thursday 23^rd May from 5pm.

Thousands Celebrate in the City for Limerick’s Biggest Festival!

Limerick was a hive of activity this May Bank Holiday weekend as the city celebrated its largest and most successful Riverfest ever in 2013!

10,000 runners, walkers and joggers descended on Limerick for the Great Limerick Run on Sunday 5^th May while the city’s Market Quarter produced an array of aromas during the Coors Light Riverfest BBQ on Saturday 4^th May.

Riverfest 2013 aimed to showcase all that is great about Limerick City, from the best resource of the River Shannon to the music, sporting, artistic and food communities.

There was late night music across Limerick city entertainment venues throughout the weekend, cookery demos and car shows in the city’s parks, live theatre and a continental fair while street entertainers, face painters and stilt walkers provided plenty of family fun!

Limerick City of Culture 2014 Logo Unveiled

Limerick, set to become Ireland’s first National City of Culture in 2014 unveiled its new logo for the year’s celebrations in front of thousands of spectators at a spectacular fireworks display on the banks of the River Shannon last night (Saturday).

The new logo, designed by Limerick based Avid Graphic Design, has been created to incorporate the energy of the River Shannon, its notable bridges and the 13^thcentury King John’s Castle, all of which are iconic images of Limerick city. The brushstroke has a dual purpose, to capitalise the ‘L’ of the city and boast of the creativity and artistry that permeates Limerick. The magenta tones refer to the city’s ceremonial links to the first Duke of Magenta and the Flight of the Wild Geese.

St. Gabriel’s School & Centre for children with multiple physical disabilities is delighted to accept the gift of a Liberty Swing from Variety Ireland.

The Liberty Swing was presented to St.Gabriel’s School by Kamal Ibrahim, Mr World today (Tuesday).

For more than 50 years Variety the Children’s Charity has been helping sick, disabled and disadvantaged children in Ireland.

Muireann Sadlier, acting Principal, St.Gabriel’s School said “. It is a wonderful gift and we are really pleased to accept this fantastic piece of playground equipment on behalf of the children who attend our special needs school. The swing will provide enjoyment and fun for children who have a range of disabilities and/or reduced mobility. Marking 40 years of European Membership and Ireland’s succession of EU presidency, Leviathan Political Cabaret will visit Limerick for an evening of frank discussion, public conversation and entertainment. “Communicating Europe” with Leviathan is designed to inform, entertain and engage the Irish public on EU issues. The Leviathan Roadshow will visit Dolan’s Warehouse, Limerick on Thursday, May 2^nd at 8pm, admission is free and open to the public.

Minister for Jobs, Enterprise and Innovation, Richard Bruton, TD, today announced that ACI Worldwide Inc. (NASDAQ:ACIW) is to expand its Software Development Centre in Limerick with the creation of 60 new jobs. ACI Worldwide is a major vendor of software and services to the global payments industry. This investment is supported by the Department of Jobs, Enterprise and Innovation through IDA Ireland.

Limerick will become a mecca for foodies, fun seekers and fun runners this May Bank Holiday weekend as the city’s biggest festival RIVERFEST launched its programme of events today.

Running from Friday, May 3^rd – Monday, May 6^th, the Limerick festival is pulling out all the stops this year with the Coors Light RIVERFEST BBQ, Ireland’s largest BBQ cook-off attracting professional and amateur teams from across Ireland featuring a host of grilled gastronomic delights, cookery demonstrations from celebrity chef Donal Skehan and a huge artisan Continental Fair.

Limerick Man who Conquered Everest Begins Next Challenge

Limerick climber Mark Quinn, who became the youngest person born in the Irish Republic to conquer Mount Everest in 2011, has taken on a new challenge, climbing two of the world’s highest mountains on a single expedition.

Mark’s summer expedition was launched today by Mayor of Limerick, Cllr Gerry McLoughlin, at the Savoy Hotel in Limerick city.

There are fourteen mountains in the world higher than eight thousand meters. To climb all fourteen is rarer than Olympic gold for mountaineers and only an estimated 33 people have achieved this. Irish mountaineers have climbed seven of these and Mark is attempting to add two more to the list for Ireland: Gasherbrum I / K5 and Gasherbrum II / K4, the 11^th and 13^th highest mountains in the world, respectively.

Burlington Teen Tour Band (Canada) Overall Parade Winners at Limerick International Band Championship

Canada’s oldest and largest youth marching band, The Burlington Teen Tour band have taken the top prize at the Limerick International Band Championship in front of 40,000 spectators in Limerick this afternoon (Monday).

Twenty two marching bands featuring musicians from across Ireland, Europe and the USA performed for the 43rd International Band Championship which is part of the Limerick St Patrick’s Festival.

The event was led by The Irish Army Band, The band of 1 Southern Brigade and included performances from more than 1100 musicians in Ireland’s only international band competition which featured a world class judging panel.

Winning band spokesman, Jeremy Johnston-Lindsay, said the 120 strong ensemble was ‘overwhelmed’ to be announced winners of the All Ireland International Band Championship Trophy which was sponsored by Shannon Development.
